Our Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
We use artificial intelligence and machine-learning systems (“AI/ML”) as part of the Services, including to review parking, identify patterns indicating sidewalk riding, verify age and eligibility to use the Services, and detect suspected riding by more than one passenger. These systems may support automated decisions affecting whether a ride can be ended, vehicle speed, whether a ride can be started, or access to an account.
This section describes the AI/ML systems we use in connection with the Services, the personal data they process, the purposes of the processing, the potential outcomes and risks, and our use of external providers. Automated systems that are not based on artificial intelligence may also process personal data and affect use of the Services, as described below and elsewhere in this Notice.
Description of the Systems and Their Purposes
The AI/ML systems we use may include:
-
Image-based parking review. We analyze images that you upload at the end of a ride to determine whether the vehicle has been parked in a permitted and appropriate location without blocking sidewalks or passageways. The system considers, among other things, the vehicle’s orientation, its position relative to access routes, and the risk of obstruction. The result may determine whether the ride can be ended and may lead to a warning or enforcement measures under the applicable policy. This system is operated by Bird and may use models provided by external providers, including Claude Sonnet, OpenAI GPT, and Amazon Nova. Human review may be carried out for analytical purposes only and is not a routine part of the decision-making process.
-
Visual Parking System (VPS). The system helps you find an approved parking location in real time. It uses images from your device camera and your location data and compares them with Google images and maps to identify the vehicle’s precise location. The system then displays guidance in the application to an area where parking and ending the ride are permitted. The system operates through Google’s ARCore Geospatial API service.
-
Sidewalk-riding detection. A machine-learning system developed and operated by Bird analyzes vehicle sensor data in real time, including acceleration, movement, speed and vibration, to distinguish sidewalk riding from riding on a road or bicycle lane. The system may automatically slow the vehicle or stop the ride. The system is based on an in-house machine-learning system and a third-party computer-vision system, including Ninebot. The decision is made without routine human review, and the information is not used to develop a third party’s AI system.
-
Age estimation, eligibility verification, and detection of multiple riders. We use selfies, images of identification documents, and vehicle sensor data, including weight or mass data, to estimate age, verify eligibility to use the Services, match a selfie to the photograph in an identification document, and detect suspected riding by more than one passenger. We use Amazon Rekognition for facial analysis. The result may lead to rejection of registration, restriction of ride activation, or measures concerning an account, without routine human review.
Types of Personal Data Processed
Depending on the system and feature you use, these systems may process:
-
End-of-ride images and images of the surrounding environment, which may include bystanders or property;
-
Live images from the device camera, spatial-environment data and precise real-time location data, where processed through the VPS;
-
Selfies and images of identification documents;
-
Identification-document details, such as a photograph, date of birth and document number;
-
Precise location data and route history;
-
Speed, acceleration, vibration, movement and other sensor data;
-
Riding-behavior and safety-event data; and
-
Weight or mass-distribution data, where collected as part of the Services.
Additional information is provided in the section titled “What Information Do We Collect?”
Purposes of Processing Personal Data Through These Systems
We process personal data through these systems to:
-
Provide and operate the Services;
-
Verify age and eligibility;
-
Enforce parking and riding rules;
-
Protect the safety of users and the public;
-
Detect misuse;
-
Improve the accuracy of the systems and the Services; and
-
Comply with legal requirements or requirements imposed by Public Partners.
External Providers and Personal Data Sharing. To operate certain systems, we may disclose personal data to technology providers acting on our behalf, including model providers and image-analysis service providers.
For example, we may use models provided by Anthropic, OpenAI, or Amazon for parking review, and Amazon Rekognition for age estimation or facial analysis. Such sharing is carried out in accordance with the sections titled “How Do We Share Your Personal Data?” and “How Do We Transfer Your Personal Data.” We require providers to use personal data solely to provide services to us, in accordance with our instructions and their applicable obligations. If we provide a different notice for a particular Service, or applicable law otherwise requires or permits, we will act in accordance with that notice and applicable law.
To operate the VPS, live images from the device camera, spatial-environment data and precise real-time location data are transferred to Google for spatial processing through the ARCore Geospatial API. Further information about the location of processing and the retention period is not provided here.
Risks and Limitations
-
Incorrect parking classification. Poor lighting, glare or camera angle may cause legal or illegal parking to be classified incorrectly.
-
Inaccurate location or parking guidance. Camera-calibration issues, obstructions in the field of view or GPS signal deviation may cause inaccurate spatial identification or parking guidance.
-
Incorrect sidewalk-riding detection. A sensor-calibration error may cause sidewalk riding to be detected incorrectly and result in an unjustified speed reduction while riding on a road or bicycle lane.
-
Age-estimation errors or bias. The system may produce an incorrect or biased age estimate, which may affect account verification or permission to start a ride.
-
Incorrect detection of multiple riders. The system may mistakenly detect more than one rider and unnecessarily flag a policy violation or apply measures concerning the account.
-
Biometric privacy risks. Processing facial images and biometric data for age estimation and eligibility verification involves privacy and information-security risks.
-
Potential effects of errors. Errors in these systems may prevent a ride from ending, cause parking warnings or fines, reduce vehicle speed or stop a ride, reject registration, restrict ride activation or lead to unnecessary measures concerning an account.
Safeguards, Information Security, and Retention. We implement reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect information, as described in the section titled “Information Security and Retention.” We may also monitor system performance and review results and malfunctions for analysis and improvement purposes. Information is retained according to its type, the purpose of processing, and applicable legal requirements.
Your Rights and Requests Concerning an Automated Result. Your rights regarding personal information processed through these systems are described in the section titled “Your Rights.” If you believe that an incorrect result was reached based on an automated system, you may contact us at privacy@bird.co and ask us to review your inquiry, subject to applicable law and our procedures.
How Do We Share Your Personal Data?
Affiliates and Subsidiaries
We share personal data among the companies within our corporate group. Our “corporate group” includes companies that are affiliated with us through common ownership or control. We share personal data within our corporate group as part of our ordinary business operations and in order to provide products and Services.
Public Partners and Transportation Authorities
In certain locations, our Services are provided in cooperation with local authorities or are subject to authorization by governmental or municipal authorities. Accordingly, our business partners may include governmental authorities, local authorities, public or quasi-public entities, local transportation authorities, public transportation operators, and official data aggregators (each a “Public Partner” and collectively, the “Public Partners”).
We will disclose your information to Public Partners as required in order to operate in a particular city or location. Public Partners may use this information to help improve, characterize, or manage urban-planning activities, public-transportation services, traffic congestion, or our vehicles or Services. For example, this may include designating vehicle parking zones, issuing parking fines or attributing them to the relevant user, creating restricted areas in which our vehicles may not operate, such as sidewalks, or establishing slow-speed zones in which we may automatically apply a speed limit to our vehicles. Public Partners may also use the information for other public-interest purposes that they determine. In some cases, sharing your information with Public Partners may be required by law or regulation.
For some of these purposes, cities have adopted a standardized dataset known as the “Mobility Data Specification.” This dataset establishes a standard for communication and data sharing between cities and private mobility providers such as us. We may provide Mobility Data Specification data to Public Partners in locations where we provide Services.
For more information about the Mobility Data Specification, please visit https://www.openmobilityfoundation.org/about-mds/.

We require these providers to implement appropriate safeguards to protect the confidentiality of personal data and to use such personal data solely for the purposes for which access was granted.
-
Business Partners. We share personal data with other companies that assist us in providing Services to our customers or in reaching potential customers through our marketing communications. Opting out of marketing communications will not affect your ability to use the Services. For example:

Cookie Notice
What is a Cookie?
Almost every website uses cookie technologies, and we are no exception. We use cookies, web beacons, pixels, tags, social media plug-ins, and other similar technologies (some of which are operated by third parties) on our websites and other digital platforms to collect data. In this Notice, we refer to all such tracking technologies collectively as “Cookies.”
Cookies are small files that store internet settings. A Cookie consists of a string of letters and numbers that uniquely identifies your device and collects information about your use of our website and, in some cases, other websites.
How Does Cookie Technology Work?
The first time you visit a website, your device’s web browser will download the Cookies placed by that website and store them in your web browser (for example, Chrome, Safari, Edge, etc.). The Cookie will collect information about your visit, such as the pages you visited, the website’s performance, the advertisements you clicked on, how you arrived at the website, your account login status, and your preferences and settings, depending on the type of Cookie.
The next time you visit the same website using the same device, the Cookies and the information stored in them are sent back to the website (first-party Cookies) or to another website if the Cookies are operated by a third party (third-party Cookies). This exchange of information enables the website to recognize that you have visited before and to provide more relevant content and functionality.
We use Cookie data to help us understand, among other things, the number of visitors to our website, how quickly pages load, whether there are any performance issues, to remember your preferences, personalize content and advertisements, and track the performance of our advertising activities. We may combine this information with other information that we collect from you.
What Kind of Cookies Do We Use?
Different Cookies serve different purposes. We categorize them into two groups based on their function and purpose: Strictly Necessary Cookies and Analytics Cookies. In addition, we use other tracking technologies, including pixels and beacons.
For more information about specific Cookies, including the identity of any third parties that receive data collected through Cookies and the expiration periods of such Cookies, and to manage your preferences regarding Analytics Cookies, please click “Cookie Preferences” in the Cookie banner displayed on our website.
-
Strictly Necessary. Strictly Necessary Cookies are required for the proper operation of the website. Without them, the website cannot function as intended. For example, they enable the website to display a version optimized for your internet connection bandwidth or to transfer website activity to another server during periods of high user traffic. Because these Cookies are essential to the operation of the website, they cannot be rejected or disabled.
-
Analytics. These Cookies collect information about how the website is used and how it performs. They tell us how many visitors we have, how visitors arrive at our website, how they navigate through it, whether they encounter error messages, how quickly pages load, and help us measure the effectiveness of our advertising, among other things. This information helps us measure and improve the performance of our website. Analytics Cookies do not store information that directly identifies users and are used solely to understand and improve the functionality of our websites. One type of Analytics Cookie that we use is Google Analytics, a web analytics service provided by Google, Inc. (“Google”).
To learn more about Google’s analytics services and how to opt out of Google Analytics tracking, please visit https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout/.
- Pixels and Beacons. Pixel tags, also known as web beacons or clear GIFs, are tiny and generally invisible graphic elements that contain a unique identifier. They operate similarly to Cookies and may be embedded in web pages or email messages. As noted above, in this Notice we refer to pixels and beacons as part of our Cookies technologies.
We and our service providers may use Cookies to understand how users interact with our Services, assist in the delivery and management of content, measure the performance of our advertising activities, and generate statistics regarding the use of our Services.
In addition, we or our service providers may use Cookies in HTML-formatted emails that we send to customers. This helps us understand, for example, whether an email has been opened, when it was viewed, response rates to our communications, and whether the email was forwarded to additional recipients.
How Can I Control or Delete Cookies?
You may choose not to consent to our use of Analytics Cookies. Please note that if you choose to reject these Cookies, you may not be able to use the full functionality of the website, which may affect your experience of the Bird’s Services and the relevance of the content presented to you. The following are some of the ways in which you can manage Cookies:
Web Browsers
You may choose whether to allow our use of Analytics Cookies at any time through the cookie consent tool available on our website.
You may also block certain Cookies through the Cookie settings of the browser you use to access the Services. Please note that if you configure your browser settings to block all Cookies (including Strictly Necessary Cookies), you may not be able to use the Services.
Some browsers incorporate a feature known as “Do Not Track” (“DNT”), which signals to websites that you do not wish to be tracked. Because there is no common understanding of how to interpret DNT signals, our websites do not currently respond to browser DNT signals. However, you may still control Cookies through the other options available to you as described in this Cookie Notice.
Even if you accept some or all Cookies on our website, you may still configure your browser to notify you whenever Cookies are being set, allowing you to decide whether to accept them.
Mobile Devices
Both Apple and Android mobile devices generate an advertising identifier that can be accessed by applications and used by advertisers in a manner similar to the way Cookies are used on websites. Each operating system provides options to limit tracking and/or reset the advertising identifier.
Email Pixels / Web Beacons
You may disable pixels or web beacons in email communications through your email service settings by preventing the automatic downloading of images.
General Advertising Opt-Out
You may:
-
Opt-out of receiving targeted communications (including marketing emails) by clicking the “Unsubscribe” link at the bottom of the communication or by contacting us at privacy@bird.co.
-
Reset the advertising identifier on your mobile device, or take other actions made available through your device’s operating system settings. Doing so will disconnect advertising-related activity previously associated with your preferences from your future activity.
-
Please note that we do not control the settings or choices offered by the browser you use or the operating system installed on your mobile device.
-
Request that we stop sending you promotional communications. We will cease sending such communications in accordance with applicable law and within a reasonable period of time, subject to operational constraints, after receiving such a request. You may also request that we remove your name from our mailing lists.
Our Legal Basis for Processing your Personal Data
